There are a lot more large groups of e-bike riders riding together on streets in Providence. Sometimes they ride four abreast, weave between lanes, and do wheelies in traffic, especially on Shaumber Road and Dorrell Lane.

Many drivers have been patient and held back, often slowing down and giving riders more room. But these behaviors are happening more and more often, which is raising serious safety concerns. Police say that the combination of speed, not enough protective gear, and riding patterns that are hard to predict can quickly lead to a serious accident.

Metro police say that riding multiple bikes in one lane slows traffic and makes it harder for drivers and riders to see. When bikers pop wheelies or suddenly switch lanes, it's challenging for drivers to know what they're going to do next. The result makes crashes more likely, especially at intersections or during busy times of day.

Police want people to know that e-bikes are still motorized vehicles that can go very fast, even though they are quieter and are often thought of as toys. When people drive carelessly or without the right safety gear, the results can be the same as when motorcycles or scooters crash, such as serious head injuries, broken bones, and life-threatening trauma.

Metro officials have confirmed that they are making patrols more visible in places where group riding is becoming more common. Officers are keeping a closer eye on violations like:

• Riding or stunting in traffic without care
• Blocking roads
• Not yielding
• Riding without the right safety gear
• Driving without helmets while underage

Enforcement aims not to prevent legal riding but to avert preventable tragedies. Officers say that many e-bike riders are kids, so parents are urged to learn about the rules in their area and make sure their kids have the right helmets and safety gear.

Safety advocates say that ebike riders and drivers both have a duty to keep the road safe. E-bike riders should ride in a single file when it's safe, follow traffic signals, move in a predictable way, and avoid stunts in active traffic lanes. All of these tips will make riding much safer.

Drivers are also reminded to be careful, slow down when they see groups of e-bike riders, and stay away from aggressive driving that could make things worse.

City officials say that education and enforcement must work together as the popularity of e-bikes continues to rise. The goal is not to punish but to stop something from happening. As Metro pays more attention, the hope is that riders will change their behavior before someone in Providence is hurt badly or killed in a crash caused by risky group riding.

People in the community who see dangerous riding patterns are asked to report their concerns through non-emergency channels so that officers can take action before something bad happens.

Law enforcement has stressed e-bikes are allowed on the road, but safety must come first.

The past week was a relatively quiet period for our area, with no major incidents or new development approvals reported within Providence or Skye Canyon.

Ongoing regional freeway work continued along portions of US-95 and the 215 Beltway, which may have contributed to moderate congestion during peak commute times.

Southern Nevada remained in a late-winter pattern, with cooler mornings and intermittent valley rain possible. Snow conditions persisted in the Spring Mountains, drawing recreational traffic toward Lee Canyon during the weekend.
